Matt Hammitt & Jason Ingram's Bio:
Matt Hammitt is the lead singer and a founding member of the band Sanctus Real. Over the past decade, the Grammy-nominated, Dove Award–winning group has released five albums and has topped the Christian radio charts with fourteen No. 1 and Top 5 radio hits. The Hammitts’ story has been featured on K-LOVE Radio, ABC News, USA Today, and the blog bowensheart.com, which has received more than one million hits to date.
Hammitt wrote the song soon after his son, Bowen, was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare congenital defect. “When we found out that Bowen was going to be born with half a heart, it started stirring up a lot of questions in me,” Matt admits. “I started expressing all my questions, emotions, and feelings through song.” Those songs became the poignant, compelling collection heard on Every Falling Tear.
Bowen defied the odds and survived. He was born on September 9, 2010. Now over a year old, Bowen is doing well, but he is still fragile and faces a lifetime of surgeries and medicine. This syndrome affects one to two infants out of every 10,000 and represents about one percent of all congenital heart diseases.
Hammitt and his wife, Sarah, established Whole Hearts Foundation in an effort to help families learn more about pediatric congenital heart diseases, offer them support through their child’s surgeries and aftercare, and provide funding for local children’s hospitals. “We want Whole Hearts to be a resource for families dealing with their child’s illness,” he said. “We understand the practical, financial, emotional, and spiritual needs these families have.” A portion of the proceeds from the book’s sales will benefit Whole Hearts Foundation.
