Dennis and Barbara Rainey's Bio:
Dennis and Barbara Rainey are the founders of FamilyLife, a ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ that offers tools and resources to build strong homes. Dennis, the ministry’s executive director, cohosts the radio program FamilyLife Today, and Barbara is a frequent guest on the nationally syndicated, daily program, which has 4 million listeners weekly. Tens of thousands attend FamilyLife’s Weekend to Remember marriage conferences and their “I Still Do” arena events annually; hundreds of thousands access their Web site, familylife.com, now in five languages. Dennis is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and holds an honorary doctorate from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois.
Dennis is senior editor of the HomeBuilders Couples Series (with over 1.3 million copies sold worldwide) and author of two Gold Medallion winners, including Ministering to Twenty-First Century Families (2002). Barbara has published articles on family-related topics and is also a frequent speaker at Weekend to Remember conferences. She is the author of Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember and recently coauthored A Mother’s Legacy with her daughter, Ashley Rainey Escue. Barbara and Dennis have coauthored several bestselling books, including Starting Your Marriage Right, Moments Together for Couples, The New Building Your Mate’s Self-Esteem, Parenting Today’s Adolescent, and the HomeBuilders Couples Series study Building Your Mate’s Self-Esteem. Growing a Spiritually Strong Family was the first book in their popular Family First series.
Dennis Rainey was involved in youth ministry for five years before co-founding FamilyLife. Following his graduation from the University of Arkansas in 1970, he joined Campus Crusade for Christ, where he began working with high school students in Dallas, Texas. “It was then that I got my first vision for the impact of the family,” says Dennis. Barbara graduated from the University of Arkansas with a history degree and became a staff member of Campus Crusade in 1971. The longtime friends were urged to marry by a former campus director in 1972. Within a week they were engaged, and six weeks later they were married.
Later, at Dallas Theological Seminary, Dennis’s vision for strengthening families crystallized. FamilyLife launched its first conference for engaged Campus Crusade staff members in 1976. That same year Dennis’s father died, and the young parents of three were struck by the responsibility of leaving their own godly legacy.
"I am grateful to God for the privilege of public ministry through radio, conferences, and writing,” Dennis says, but “all that is a mere shadow by comparison to the ups and downs of love in a real family. One of the greatest privileges of my life is being called ‘Daddy.’” Along with being a mom and grandmother, Barbara’s special interests include sewing, gardening, and painting with watercolors. Parents of six children (along with one son-in-law and two daughters-in-law), and grandparents of two, the Raineys live near Little Rock, Arkansas.
