The Bare Bones Bible Bios: 10 Minutes to Knowing the Men and Women of the Bible

by Jim George

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

Reference books tend to be huge volumes crammed full of every detail the author can gather on a subject. But the subtitle of The Bare Bones Bible Bios claims “10 Minutes to Knowing the Men and Women of the Bible”, and author Jim George keeps that promise. You won’t find any rambling biographies of minor Biblical personalities. Instead you will find 50 concise glimpses of key people arranged in the order they appear in the Bible.

‘Bare Bones’ does not mean just a few simple facts that are already common knowledge to any young Sunday School student. George starts with the subject’s Most Notable Quality, Most Notable Accomplishment, Date Lived, Name Meaning and Major Text. The ‘Bare Bones Background’ provides a brief look at the historical settings or family information to provide some context. The ‘Quick Sketch’ gives an overview of the person’s life as related to his major role in the Bible.

George then puts some flesh on those bare bones by showing ‘The Big Picture’, bullet points that analyze the main aspects of the person’s biblical account. ‘The Portrait’ summarizes the impact and significance of the subject’s life, and then George concludes with drawing life lessons for the reader to apply to his own life. Each chapter concludes with a shaded box containing related information, such as an overview of the Minor Prophets following Jonah’s story or ‘Other Tax Collectors Mentioned in the Gospels’ after Matthew’s biography.

George packs each chapter with insights as well as information. This is one reference book you may just find yourself sitting down and reading from cover to cover, no bones about it. -- Jeff Friend,
