The Bathtub Is Overflowing but I Feel Drained: How to Defeat Mommy Stress

by Lysa TerKeurst

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

In her latest release, The Bathtub Is Overflowing, But I Feel Drained, Lysa TerKeurst tells women who suffer from mommy stress what to do when they’re running on empty.  TerKeurst’s disclaimer is that her book will not answer every question about being a mom, but she affirms, “I can promise you’ll look at your role (after reading the book) with a soul that feels refreshed.”

This transparent author suggests the same remedies she applies to herself:  refill your heart, refuel your approach, and renew your perspective. As president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, TerKeurst doesn’t point a finger at the female reader who feels drained.  Instead, she points out her own shortages of patience and perspective with her five children for the purpose of showing how Christ, if we let Him, can creatively restore us.

TerKerust says that learning to embrace the calling of motherhood with joy “will shape the generations that come after.”  This won’t be accomplished, she says, by being a slave to the tyranny of the urgent.  Her frustration, for example, of spying 14 pairs of misplaced shoes around the house one day could’ve drained her, TerKeurst admits. She chose, instead, to see the treasure of what each pair of smelly shoes represented—“some pretty amazing people.”

Far from taking a Pollyanna approach to life, TerKeurst invites the reader to “pull back the veil and peek behind the messes, chores, and faults of others.”  On the other hand, she believes it takes everyone, including the kids, to get things back into their place.  As long as the TerKerust family doesn’t mind finding itself on the bookstore shelf, it is well worth your while to pull off a copy and spend some time reading the wisdom and comedy shared here. And, you don’t even have to be a mom who feels drained to enjoy it. – Cheryl A. Cecil, Christian Book

  • turn to God for support, peace, guidance, and patience
  • stop blaming their parenting every time a child does wrong
  • let kids live with the consequences of their bad choices
  • simplify life to create breathing room
  • quit comparing themselves to the “perfect” moms

Overflowing with practical ideas, short Bible studies, and plenty of encouragement, this inspiring resource will help overwhelmed mothers turn to God’s grace as their lifeline.
