Outrageous Mercy: Rediscover the Radical Nature of Christianity

by Bill Farley

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

"Outrageous Mercy, by William P. Farley, is a book that attempts to challenge its reader to examine the many facets of the Christian life at the foot of the cross. Farley addresses the common problems of our misdirected thoughts and beliefs about God and our faith that have resulted because of our lack of understanding of the impact of Jesus' death on the cross. He writes this book as a catalyst for the reader to closely examine the effect of the cross on faith.

"Farley states, 'The cross has two dimensions. It is something that God has done for us, but it is a revelation of vital truths communicated to us.' The emphasis and theme of this book is what the cross says to us. The style of the book is very informal, yet he does not use words that the average person will not know and understand. It reads like a transcript from a sermon. In fact, Farley pastors a church in Spokane, Washington and his articles have appeared in publications like Focus on the Family and Discipleship Journal. He has also authored the book For His Glory.

"Farley states in his Preface 'The cross teaches us everything we need to know about life, death, God, humanity, eternity, and a host of other issues.' The rest of the book is organized into eleven chapters that each evaluates a different aspect of faith, then challenges the common viewpoint and makes a case for viewing this point from the perspective of the cross.

"It is obvious that Bill Farley has a deep knowledge of Scripture. He also has a vast understanding of doctrinal beliefs. I appreciate his theory that he attempts to explain, however, Farley does not focus his material, which waters down his theory and purpose of the book. Each chapter could be a book within itself. There are supporting points and sub-points in many sections of each chapter, yet at times it is difficult to follow the progression and development of his thought. This book is best suited for a Bible teacher or pastor, as the average layman would get lost in the amount of information included in this work. I only recommend this book if the reader has the need for more information regarding the impact of the cross on faith and doctrine." -- Dave Walters, Christian Book

How can God demand justice and dispense mercy at the same time?

What meeting ground can exist between one who is infinitely holy and those who are absolutely sinful?

The cross of Christ answers those questions and many more. So why do we take such an important symbol so lightly? We put it on bumper stickers and use it as a fashion accessory, seldom reflecting on its significance.

Bill Farley urges you to examine the cross closely and discover the rich spiritual truths deep in its grain. Whether you're a new believer, an experienced Christian, or a veteran of ministry, making the cross central in your life will yield fresh insights into God's purpose for you.
