It's A Wonderful (Imperfect) Life: Daily Encouragement for Women Who Strive Too Hard to Make It Just Right

by Joan Webb

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

Joan C. Webb’s devotional reading, It’s a Wonderful (Imperfect) Life, is relevant and applicable for the women in our Western culture who are bombarded with the need for perfection every day. Everywhere women look, they’re told they need to strive for perfect bodies, careers, families, and spiritual lives--even church commitment. Women are becoming workaholics and perfectionists, forcing themselves to have unrealistic expectations for their lives.

How do these women overcome the struggle to be flawless? What do God and His Word have to say about perfection? It’s a Wonderful (Imperfect) Life addresses these issues with 163 daily readings that take three minutes each; who can’t spare three minutes? Webb says even though God is holy, that doesn’t mean He won’t love us because of our imperfections and sins; God’s love covers all our sins. Webb writes this book to instill that truth in the lives of the readers, just as John 8:32 says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Each devotion has a Scripture passage, with translations from TLB to the NKJV, a real-life story, a prayer to pray throughout the day, and an applicable “Make it Personal” section. Webb’s passion for women and their struggles is shown throughout the book, and she is genuine about the struggles in her own life. She is also not afraid to broach any subject, including how the church itself can place pressure on women to be perfect and successful. Webb makes a point to bring up the harder subjects in life, but she does so with tact.

I would recommend this to any woman, young or old. Younger women would benefit most, hopefully becoming encouraged to let the truths throughout the book infiltrate their lives at an early age. As this is a devotional reading, though, don’t let it take the place of spending time in God’s Word. Instead, let it be a jumping-off point for your quiet time with God. Be warned, however: this book will challenge you and change you. – Caitlin Wilson,
