Power[full]: The Power of God in a Girl

by Chandra Peele

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

The theme in the book Power[full]: The Power of God in a Girl by Chandra Peele is exactly what the reader would expect -- the power that comes from a relationship with God. Using 2 Timothy as a guide, Peele addresses the problem of feeling and acting powerless when the opposite should be the case. The book discusses the source of power, what to do with power, and the urgency of using the power given to us by God.

Peele discusses several aspects of power, including the possibilities of being powerful, the responsibility of being a powerful Christian with the world watching, being confident in the power of God, finding power in the Word of God, and using the power of God for the Kingdom of God. The book is structured as a six-week Bible study of the book of 2 Timothy, with day-by-day questions and applications. The book is easy to read with anecdotes and relevant metaphors, ideal for a preteen audience. As an experienced author, public speaker, and former minister to youth, Peele shares the lessons she has learned.

The book is easy to follow and understand, with some thoughtful questions at the end of each lesson. The lessons are important, and the biblical context of the book is sound. Peele uses Scripture in an appropriate way, helping to apply the message of 2 Timothy to the lives of preteen girls who struggle with wanting to feel powerful in a world that makes them feel powerless. The book focuses on the relationship females must have with God in order to be filled with his Spirit and his power: the same thing John described in his third epistle. “This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.” The book’s audience is a narrow one because it is too simple for anyone older than preteen ages and too advanced for anyone younger than around ten. I recommend the book for ages 10 to 13. – Alexis Warner,
